Majority Leader Schumer Statement On Launch Of Biden Administration's Student Debt Relief Portal

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) released the following statement today after the formal launch of the Biden Administration's student debt relief portal:

"Today's announcement from the Biden Administration means that with the simple click of a button, millions of Americans can wipe their student debt clean. I'm pleased that the Biden administration heeded my call to make the application for student debt relief straightforward and uncomplicated so that millions of Americans can soon get relief that's going to make a monumental difference in their everyday lives.

"Let's not forget today's announcement will overwhelmingly impact working and middle-class families, with nearly 90% of the debt being canceled going to those earning less than $75,000 a year.

"In New York it will have a direct impact on 2 million borrowers, wiping out the debt completely for 1 million borrowers. This is the opposite of the tax cuts the Republicans pushed for, where the vast majority of money went to the top 1%."
